Since 2001, Valid has worked closely with national health services, Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations across several districts to support Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC) programmes and to conduct operational research into nutrition and HIV/AIDS. Valid is also managing the local production of Ready-to-Use Food (RUF) through facilities in the capital Lilongwe and at a district level mission hospital. As in Ethiopia, early successes in Malawi played a key role in the development and demonstration of the CTC model. Valid?s partnership with Concern Worldwide since 2002, and with FANTA in 2002-2004 was essential in ensuring our work in Malawi. Since 2003 Valid has maintained a permanent presence in the country.

Valid’s work in Malawi has included:

2009 - 2010
Working with Clinton Foundation and US Dairy Export Council (USDEC) to develop and test a whey-protein based RUTF. The study aims to develop a new RUTF recipe and then trial the efficacy of this alternative RUTF against existing formulas.

2008 - 2010
Working with Concern on to develop, carry out and review a study on Probiotics and prebiotics for severe acute malnutrition (PRONUT).

Supporting FANTA in conducting preliminary trials of their CMAM training modules.

2006
Conducting a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a probiotic enhanced RUF for the treatment of malnutrition and control of related infection. Supporting Save the Children (US) in the implementation of Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC) programmes in various districts.

Conducting a study that confirmed the efficacy of RUF as nutritional support for HIV infected adults.
